2022 Makeup Trends

I think deep down we all like to feel we are “on trend”, like we are current, you know moving with the times. But sometimes trends can be somewhat extreme. Take fashion and beauty for instance. There’s nothing more that I like to marvel at than the creative genius of Val Garland or the iridescent artworks of Pat Mcgrath, but it can be somewhat difficult to see how we can take the Makeup Trends from Fashion Weeks storytellers and turn them into “out for brunch with the girls”. So, are the Makeup Trends for 2022 wearable?

Let me tell you about a few of the Makeup Trends for 2022 from Spring Fashion Week that have got me really excited, and how you may be able to incorporate them into your makeup routine.

CONTOUR BLUSH – This has me excited AF. I LOVE blush, I think it is really under utilised and can be the difference between a really put together makeup look and an underwhelming finish to your face. The contour blush look is all about marrying your eye look with your blush. Sweeping the blush colour from your apples up to your temples to gently blend with your eyeshadow can add lift and frame to your face. My trick is to not add colour to your brush after applying the product to your cheeks, this way the colour will be subtle and less intense as you move to the temples. I love NARS blush products. Every Christmas they bring out an amazing palette of hybrid powder/gel products which blend brilliantly and always add glow.

GLOSS LIPS – I feel like gloss has got a bad rep over the years but honestly there’s nothing easier to glam up a look or add a touch of femininity than a slick of clear or tinted gloss. I don’t think you can go past MAC Lip Glass if you are after a high shine finish but I also really love the Mecca Max Gloss Boss lip glosses which come in a great range of shades.

GLITTER, GREEN & NEON EYES – Ok, so this can be a little trickier, but not impossible. I’ve recently recorded a live on my take of Green Eyeshadow that’s totally wearable. You can watch it HERE. If colour frightens you, using a small amount on your mobile lid, blended out with a neutral shadow is an easy way to dip your toe into this trend. You can also use neon colours and glitter as liner instead of technicolour lids. Glitter can be trickier as we enter matureagedom haha! But not impossible. If you are like me and love a bit of sparkle, then just focus a sweep of the good stuff across your mobile lid and try to avoid any creases. Also, don’t let anyone tell you that you are too old for glitter!! Mecca make a wonderful selection of single eyeshadows so if you want to give this a try but don’t want to commit to a palette, check those out. Also wetting your makeup brush with MAC Cosmetics Fix + before dipping into your bright shadow colour will instantly turn your shadow into a liner… you’re welcome. If you want an easy product to see whether or not Glitter is for you, give Stila Glitter and Go eyeshadows a go. They come with an easy little applicator so no messy glitter fall out.

90’S LINED LIPS – This trend has never been out of fashion as far as I’m concerned. I adore a dark lined lip subtly blended with a nude lippie or touch of gloss or balm. The trick is to find the perfect lip pencil, it needs to be 1 -2 shades darker than your natural lip colour. Check out the Mecca Max Pout Pencils, they have an amazing shade selection and they blend beautifully.

PARED BACK MAKEUP LOOKS – I’m sorry, did someone say no makeup, makeup? This will never be out of fashion. Think Jessica Biel, Mila Kunis or Bella Hadid. This makeup look relies heavily on not makeup but Skincare! That’s right, the focus of this makeup is skin…. Oh my little MUA dreams!!! Primping and preening the skin to be hydrated and plumped, flushed and glowing, so that minimal foundation is required. Flushed lips and cheeks together with strategically placed concealer is the hero of this look. Now doesn’t that sound like a trend we can all get behind.

SWAP RED, FOR ORANGE – Right! You can’t go past a red lip for classic glam but the twist on this look by swapping out your favourite red for an orange…. Yes please! My favourites would have to be MAC cosmetics So Chaud or Lady Danger.

DARK OR DIFFUSED LIPS – Here’s one that I think I’m going to have to get behind. So often we think of a bold lip as bright red or pink but we are really limiting ourselves on this makeup trend. Why not try a deep, vampy, aubergine or a rich, dark, chocolate. The bonus with this current trend is that if you struggle to wear such a dark colour, applying it and then blotting it out to a sheer almost messy tint is also right up there at the moment…. LOVE! If you want to give this trend a go, I suggest starting off with a creamy lipstick that you can beef up or down depending on how comfortable you feel. I love MAC Cosmetics REBEL or DIVA, both will blot to give you a really nice diffused tint. If you are really wanting to embrace this trend then why not try a liquid lip colour that won’t budge and will give you a rich, opaque colour. Modelrock PLUM DIGGITY Liquid to Matte lipstick or MAC Cosmetics Liquid Lipcolour in HIGH DRAMA are the ones I’d give a go.
